Acid King - 1995 - Zoroaster

What's sweet about this is not only does this band provide some of the heaviest, bluesy psychedelic metal around, but the lead singer and guitarist is hard-rocking, motorcycling, bad ass chick. She's got a voice that every wannabe metal band wants to have but doesn't because they suck and she doesn't. Great songs here with some really infectious riffs. A new find on my part and I'm thoroughly impressed. It's great stuff to rock out in the kitchen with--I love strumming away on my air-spatula, adding that doom-laden, riffy marijuana love to all my most recent kitchen experiments.

Boris- Pink 2005

'Pink' is undeniably...groovy. To be brutally fucking honest, I hate describing anything as groovy 'cause it brings back memories my hippie friends trying to convince me to put on 'Dark Side' while we're rollin' in my 6-4.

Anyway, 'Pink' is an albums of varied sounds- the title track lets you know that Boris is fucking with some groovy (damn it) riffage. 'Blackout' is a sort of throwback to the drone doom that Boris is so good with, and 'Electric' is just intense. This is the album that made Boris popular to the masses- and though it's not my favorite, nor is it even close to their heaviest, 'Pink' is still a more-than-worthy Boris album.

Boris- Heavy Rocks 2002

Unlike the more drone doom influences on earlier albums like 1998's Amplifier Worship or their 1996 debut Absolutego, Boris' 'Heavy Rocks' is more in the vein of punk-influenced stoner rock. There's definitely a sort of retro feeling on this album; I mean, check out the cover- it's orange, with some psychedelic-styled text (the orange sort of reminds me of Can's extremely fantastic 'Tago Mago'). The title track 'Heavy Rocks' is pretty much indicative of the more groove-based style that the rest of the albm follows. In any case, this is a more (traditionally) melodic album- but fast, loud, and distinctly Boris. This album is fucking good and comes highly recommended by me.

In other news, my new goal is to put up what I have of the Boris discography since I already put up Amplifier Worship and this album, so expect a bunch more Boris posts in the future.

Boris- Amplifier Worship 1998

One of my favorite Boris albums. Heavy-as-fuck, droning but wildly interesting 10+ minute creations from one of the best drone doom bands around. 'Hama' and 'Kuruimizu' flirt with the more abstract drone influences, whereas 'Huge' and 'Vomitself' are brutally sludge-y. I don't know what else to say- put this in your '1000 albums I must fucking am out to before I die' list you have in your drawer.

Boris - 2003 - Akuma no Uta

Fucking ridiculous stoner metal. Starts off weird and doomy, then gets all stonery, with nice, heavy, bluesy riffs that carry you away. Really reminds me of a lot of groundwork for stoner metal Black Sabbath established in the late '60s, early '70s.
